The Institute of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Building (E3D) consists of around 20 academic and non-academic staff and about 20 student assistants. It belongs to the Faculty of Civil Engineering and covers various disciplines in the scope of engineering and the natural sciences. The interdisciplinary approach allows different perspectives upon the key fields of research.

The Institute mainly focuses on the three topic areas

indoor climate and energy efficiency,
modeling and simulation,
building envelopes and building technology.

Here, the main focus lies on modeling and simulations of building-specific physical processes in the field of energy efficient and sustainable construction and maintenance of buildings, technical installations and urban quarters – including life-cycle analysis. The E3D-team uses and refines IT-based methods in the areas of Building Information Modeling (BIM) as well as geographic information systems (GIS), thermal and energy simulation methods, the object-oriented simulation language Modelica, and multi-physics simulations.

Another focus lies on modeling and simulating user behavior and the impact of climate upon people in terms of thermal comfort. To this end, the Institute also conducts volunteer studies in climate-conditioned rooms. Our work addresses thermal ergonomics regarding vehicle air conditioning in the context of electric mobility, as well as interdisciplinary work on interactions with physiological, psychological, and demographic aspects. In addition, the Institute is involved in projects focusing on energy monitoring.

E3D is based at the new Melaten Campus – within sight of the E.ON Energy Research Center, to which we are connected in the scope of several cooperative projects. As for the aspect of lectures, the Institute offers ten courses in the field of energy-efficient building, for students of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Industrial Engineering.

This database was created as part of a cooperation project between the RWTH Aachen University and the Research Center Jülich. It provides comprehensive overview of the main research areas in energy of the two institutions.

JARA Energy

JARA Energy is a research initiative between the RWTH Aachen University and Research Center Jülich. The research activities of JARA-ENERGY are grouped along the energy value-added chain and can be broken down into Energy management and system analysis as well as materials and production technologies as cross-sectional topics and energy and sources, energy conversion, transport and networks, storage and mobility. Currently, there are about 50 members who participate actively in the interdisciplinary research of cooperative solutions for tomorrows energy supply.
